Hi, I’m Ava.

I am a Credentialled Diabetes Educator, Registered Nurse & NBHWC Certified Diabetes Coach, with personal lived experience with Type 1 Diabetes.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in adolescence and, for many years, my relationship with my diabetes was marked by extremes — from periods of self-neglect and avoidance, to cycles of overwhelming health anxiety and strict control attempts to self manage. I experimented with various restrictive approaches, including keto, low-fat, low-carb, fasting, and exercise avoidance in an attempt to “control” my diabetes, yet consistently found myself without sustainable results or predictability.

Over time, this evolved into avoidance, denial, and disconnection from my condition. My turning point came when I leant into curiosity — beginning to understand the underlying patterns driving my blood glucose variability, and how physiology, behaviour, mindset, and environment interact in real life. From there, I began to identify the key principles that supported more stable and predictable outcomes.

As both a clinician and someone living with type 1 diabetes, I began to recognise the same patterns in my clients that I had experienced myself — doing everything “right,” yet still struggling with unpredictable blood sugars and uncertainty.Conscious Diabetes was built from this overlap between clinical knowledge and lived experience as a holistic management practice with individualised treatment & support with integration.
